0% VAT on solar ends 31 March 2027

What it adds to your quote, and which date counts.

There’s a known date in the UK solar timetable: qualifying installations of solar panels and other energy-saving materials are currently zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. Under current rules, the reduced rate of 5% returns from 1 April 2027.

What could that mean for a quote?

If a qualifying installation costs £5,500 before VAT, 5% VAT would add £275. On a £10,000 qualifying installation, it would add £500. These are illustrations, not a promise about a particular quote: the exact VAT treatment depends on what’s supplied and when it’s supplied.

    Which date matters?

Don’t assume signing a contract or paying a deposit before the deadline automatically locks in 0% VAT. HMRC’s guidance describes relief for supplies of installations made within the qualifying period. If your project may cross the deadline, ask your installer to confirm the expected installation dates, how VAT will be shown on the invoice and whether any special tax-point rules apply to your circumstances.

    Does battery storage count?

HMRC includes electrical battery storage in the list of eligible energy-saving materials. Eligibility still depends on the type of property, what is installed and how the work is supplied. Ask for an itemised written quote if you’re adding storage to an existing solar system.
